I have got to say that whether I end up seeing it or not I have absolutely no desire to see it whatever, because the way I see life is the way I do, not the way anyone else interprets it, thinks they can interpret it, or dares to.
All I can see in this is US cultural hegemony not anything about our cultural diversity and difference at all.
You see I am not American and neither are the majority of the worlds aspies, indeed I am half as bad for being English.
Hello Laurentius Rex. Yes we do see the world each in our own way. I wish to see the film but I don’t automatically think I will like it. I want to see how Asperger’s Syndrome is portrayed to a general audience.
It happens to be American. It is unfortunate, I think, that Australia very little relating to autism in the media/film industry. So I am taking what I can get!
There’s a great little Australian film with an autistic protagonist called “Malcolm”. Many thanks to Jane Meyerding and Barbara Rosenn for (each, independently) bringing that film to my attention, years ago.
Ari Ne’eman had an interesting reaction to “Adam”, which I think also applies to “Malcolm” and most other films with autistic characters: the autistic character is the only character in the story who is autistic. There’s no portrayal of autistic *community*. “Mozart and the Whale” is the one exception I can think of offhand — and its portrayal of the community that serves as the backdrop for the lead characters’ relationship is just that — backdrop — and as a result pretty one-dimensional.

I saw Malcolm a long time ago, I was in school I think. I would like to see it again now that you have reminded me of it.
A film potraying multiple autistic characters in it would be good – hopefully showing how different from each other autistic people can be.
